Description
2004 Upper Deck is a 590-card set released in three series. Series One consists of a 270-card base set and was released in November, 2003. It is supplemented by the 270-card Series Two set that was released in May and a 50-card Update set was packaged into 2005 Upper Deck Series One Hobby boxes.
Each 24-pack Series One Hobby box yielded two game used cards and a 60-card 2003 Upper Deck Update factory set. Series Two Hobby boxes also contained 24 packs, and included one of four 50-card Update sets (Vintage, Play Ball, Reflections, or SP Game Used Patch).
High Gloss Factory Set
For the first time since 1996, Upper Deck's flagship product was released as a factory set. The set came packaged in a hardwood case (not unlike UD's 2000 Yankees & Dodgers Master Collections) and features all 540 Series One and Series Two cards, plus a redemption card good for the 50-card Update set. Each card, including the Updates, is covered with a special glossy coating which is even shinier than the UV-gloss Upper Deck normally uses.
Each factory set also came with a special Derek Jeter Bonus Pack. Each Bonus Pack contained three cards from a 25-card Derek Jeter set. In addition, every tenth Jeter Bonus Pack contains either A) A game-used Jeter jersey card serial-numbered to 99 copies; B) A Derek Jeter autographed card serial-numbered to 50; or C) An autographed and game-used Jeter jersey card serial-numbered to ten.
Only 9930 "High Gloss Factory Sets" were produced.
Due to the lack of "true" rookies in either series and the relatively long odds of pulling a Jeter "hit," the High Gloss Factory Set did not sell well and was discontinued after one year.
Distribution
Hobby: 24 packs plus one 2003 Upper Deck Update factory set per box, eight cards per pack (MSRP: $3); 12 boxes per case.
Retail: 24 packs per box, nine cards per pack (MSRP: $3); 12 boxes per case.
Blasters: Eight packs per box (MSRP: $19.99), nine cards per pack.
High Gloss Factory Set: 9930 sets produced.

Inserts
First Pitch
This insert set shows various celebrities throwing out the ceremonial first pitch before a game. It is numbered as a continuation of the "SP" insert series from the early-90s.
NOTES:
- As per his contract, Gordie Howe is referred to as "Mr. Hockey" on card #SP8.
- Card #SP9 was not produced. It is believed that #SP9 was to have been of long-time Milwaukee Brewers play-by-play announcer and actor Bob Uecker, but Uecker had signed an exclusive contract with Topps.

Magical Performances
This 42-card, Hobby-exclusive, set commemorates the 100th season of New York Yankee baseball. A Gold version, serial-numbered to 100 copies, is exclusive to retail packs.
The set is heavily skewed towards active club members as the rights to Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Reggie Jackson (among others) were with other trading card companies.
