Description
2001 Greats of the Game is a 137-card set released by Fleer in March, 2001. Like the previous year's set, the set focuses on retired players, and each 24-pack Hobby box will yield three on-card autographs. A stripped-down version of the product was also released to retail outlets, with only one autograph per 20-pack box.
The set is also notable for featuring some of the first officially-licensed cards Negro League players. At the time, Fleer had a license with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.
Distribution
Hobby: 24 packs per box, five cards per pack (MSRP: $4.99).
Retail: 20 packs per box, five cards per pack (MSRP: $2.99).

Promos
Beginning with the February, 2001 issue of Sports Cards Magazine, and continuing for the next five months, Fleer included a six-card promo sheet done in the style of the 2000 Greats of the Game set.
It should be noted that, whereas the Greats of the Game brand focused on retired players, all of the players included in this promo set were active at the time of printing.

Stargell Stars
In the wake of his April, 2001 death, and in order to fulfill outstanding autograph redemptions, Fleer created this special Willie Stargell game-used card. Each card is hand-numbered to 700 copies.
Autographs
This is a 94-card autographed partial-parallel of the base set. Some of the autographs packed out as redemptions, all of which expired March 1st, 2002, and are denoted in the checklist below. One of those cards that packed out as an exchange card was Willie Stargell who died before he was able to sign his cards. Fleer would fulfill Stargell's redemption with a game-used card (see above). For other players, some but not all, of their autographs did pack out. Those players who have both live autographs and redemptions are indicated below.
