1999 Skybox Molten Metal

Description

1999 Skybox Molten Metal is a 150-card set released in July 1999. The set is fractured into three subsets: Metal Smiths (cards 1-100) Heavy Metal subset (101-130, one-per-pack), and Supernatural (#131-#150, 1:2/packs). The cards are printed on 24-point foil-board cardstock.

A special edition of Molten Metal, with an exclusive Atlanta Braves-centric insert, was available to dealers who set up at the 1999 National Sports Collectors Convention in Atlanta.

Distribution

24 packs per box, 6 cards per pack (MSRP: $4.99). Hobby only. Four boxes per case.

Fusion parallels were usually the 3rd/middle card in the pack while Xplosion parallels were usually the 4th card in the pack.

Parallels

XPlosion

Xplosion is a full parallel of the base set printed on metal with rounded corners -- similar to the Leaf Steel cards in 1996 Leaf Preferred. Unlike the base set, all 150 cards were produced in equal quantities.

A promotional card featuring Kerry Wood was distributed prior to the product's national release.

Fusion

Fusion is a laser-cut set that partially-parallels the base set's last 50 cards. Cards #1-30 parallel the Heavy Metal subset (cards #101-#130), while #31-#50 reprint the Supernatural subset. Like in the base set, the Supernatural cards are short-printed in comparison to the Heavy Metal cards.

Each card is also available in the following serial-numbered parallels.

• Fusion Sterling (serial-numbered to 500 copies)
• Fusion Titanium (serial-numbered to 50 copies)

Inserts

Oh Atlanta!

This 30-card set, all of members of the Atlanta Braves, was exclusive to packs distributed at the '99 National. Each card is die-cut in the shape of the Braves' "A" logo. Curiously, these cards do not have the '99 NSCC logo on the back.

These cards are rarely seen outside the South.

Autographs

NSCC Autograph Coupons

Randomly inserted into Atlanta National Edition packs were 300 coupons good for an autograph. 50 cards are good for an autograph from any athlete at that year's National, the other 250 were for an autograph as chosen by the show's promoters.
