Description
1996 Fleer Baseball was a 600-card, single-series set. The theme for 1996 Fleer Baseball was "Different by Design," and '96 Fleer sure was different than anything the company had delivered before. The set went with a borderless, matte-finished design with the player's name, team, and position stamped in gold foil. The matte finish on the cards was chosen to give collectors an easier surface for the cards to get autographed; unfortunately, the rough surface made sorting the cards rather difficult.
Rookie cards of Matt Lawton and Mike Sweeney were in this set.
'96 Fleer continued to contribute to the "Insert Mania" trend of the decade by putting out eleven insert sets plus and for the first time, a parallel set.
Thanks a Million Promotion
In every pack, Fleer included a "Thanks a Million" scratch-off game card that was redeemable for instant-win prizes and a chance to bat for a million-dollar prize in a Major League ballpark. Game cards were inserted in every pack of most 1996 Fleer baseball card products. Each "Thanks a Million" card featured two scratch-off areas: one for instant-win prizes and another for individual letters to spell out, "T-H-A-N-K-S". Those that collected all six letters and mailed in were eligible for the "Million Dollar Hit" prize game where contestants would win $1,000,000 if they were able to hit a ball into any of three 5-foot square targets, 200 feet from home plate. Some contestants received batting lessons from Dodger great, Steve Garvey and the contest took place in Dodger Stadium and Camden Yards. While no contestant won the $1,000,000 prize, some received $1,000 in cash as a consolation prize.

Parallels
Tiffany
All 600 base cards were available in a one-per-pack "Tiffany" parallel. The Tiffany cards have a glossy coating (unlike the matte-finish of the base cards) and utilized a holographic foil for each player's nameplate.
Variations
Some base cards have a Silver Foil Variation, in which the card is stamped in silver foil. This is not to be confused with a 1996 Fleer Team Sets base card in which all cards are stamped in silver foil. The Team Sets cards have a glossy finish and are sequentially-numbered "X of 20" on the reverse. Only nine MLB teams had a Team Set released: Braves, Cubs, Dodgers, Indians, Orioles, Rangers, Red Sox, Rockies, White Sox; thus, most players do not have a Team Set card. See the 1996 Fleer Team Sets page for a checklist of all players with Team Set variations. The Silver Foil variations still have the matte finish.
In addition, a Tiffany Gold Foil Variation is known to exist. Whereas the Tiffany parallels were all stamped in silver holographic foil, these variants were stamped in the same gold foil as the base cards.
The Silver Foil and Tiffany Gold Foil variants were more than likely printing errors that just happened to sneak through the production process.
