Description
1983 Topps is a 792-card set. Known as the "circular portrait" set, 1983 Topps was issued in wax, cello, and rack packs. It was also issued as a complete factory set in the J.C. Penney catalog. The design is a mix of action shots and portraits coupled with another small circular portrait of the subject of the card located in either the lower left or right corner of the card -- not unlike the 1963 Topps two decades earlier. To the left (or right, depending on card design) of the portrait is the player's name, position, and team affiliation.
The reverse of the card contains the players standard biography (name, height, weight, throwing hand, batting hand, draft position, how acquired, birthdate, birthplace, and home city). It also contained the players career statistics up until 1982. If room allowed, the bottom of the card contained either a small comment regarding the players career, previous seasons major accomplishments. Two silhouettes of players in action were also included, one in the upper left corner which was part of the Topps logo, and a second that may have appeared, if room allowed, in the lower right corner, typically of a pitcher about to throw a pitch. And of course, the card's sequence number in the collated set appears in the uppermost left corner.
Cards 1-6 depict "Record Breakers", players that broke some sort of league or career record over the course of the 1982 season, including Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson breaking the single season stolen base record. The team cards are actually Team Leader (TL) cards picturing the batting average and ERA leader for that team with a checklist back. Super Veteran (SV) cards also appear inserted in the set, coupled with the base card of the player depicted. The SV cards contained two pictures, one of the player currently and one of the player from an earlier part of his career. Cards number 386-407 are of the previous seasons starting All-Star game representatives, beginning with the American League and then the National League. Cards number 701-708 depict the league leaders in various categories.
As in previous year's editions, stars of the era traditionally were given slots within the set every 10 cards (#10, #20, #30, etc), with major stars being awarded the hundreds (#100 in set). Every pack also contained a "Winning Line-Up" game card where collectors could win various prizes including a trip to the World Series, a Colecovision video game console, a batting glove, a 1982 leaders uncut panel or cards from the Glossy Send-Ins set.
Notable Rookie Cards include Tony Gwynn, Wade Boggs, Ryne Sandberg, Willie McGee, and Frank Viola.

Michigan Wrapper
In 1983, three years before Sportflics and five years before Score made them the industry standard, Topps experimented with a fin-sealed cellophane wrapper. These packs are known as "Michigan Wrappers," as they were distributed almost exclusively in Michigan and the surrounding area. Each Michigan Wrapper pack and box had the same number of cards as a conventional wax pack (36 packs per box, 15 cards and a stick of gum per pack), but the cellophane wrapper eliminated wax stains and the fin-seal made them virtually tamper-proof. It is possible, however, to see the top and bottom cards in the pack -- not unlike a Cello pack.
