Gimmicks, Errors, and Variations

Wal-Mart Variations

In what would become an unfortunate taste of things to come, Topps randomly inserted into Series One packs sold only at Wal-Mart, the following four "variation" cards. Like gimmicks in future years, there is nothing on the card (other than the photo used) that differentiates the regular base card from the gimcrack.

Due to collector ambivalence, and the astronomical odds of finding one (1:3700/packs), few collectors are even aware of these card's existence.

  • 15 Andrew Miller (Holding ball on mound)
  • 20 Delmon Young (looking right)
  • 135 Troy Tulowitzki (Fielding)
  • 271 Delwyn Young (Bat Resting on Shoulder)
  • 292 Josh Fields (Running)

NoSigs

These six cards were randomly inserted into Series Two packs and, as the name suggests, without the player's facsimile signature. These cards were available in all S2 pack types and are much easier to find that the S1 Wal-Mart cards.

  • 411 Jason Bay
  • 437 Paul LoDuca
  • 481 Jim Thome
  • 630 Daisuke Matsuzaka
  • 634 Alex Gordon
  • 660 Yadier Molina

Japanese

Topps randomly inserted into S2 packs a rendition of Daisuke Matsuzaka's rookie card in Japanese text. It is noticeably tougher to find than his base card, or his NoSig variation.

  • 630 Daisuke Matsuzaka

Parallels

  • 1st Edition (Hobby and HTA only)
