1993 Leaf

Description

1993 Leaf is a 550-card set released in three series of 220, 220, and 110 cards, respectively. The first two series of cards were distributed in 14-card foil packs, jumbo packs and magazine packs. The third series, known officially as "Leaf Update," was Hobby only and distributed only in 14-card waxpacks. In addition, Leaf announced a production run of only 6250 12-box cases of Leaf Update.

For '93, Donruss greatly improved the quality of the Leaf set -- putting it on par with other "premium" products (e.g. Stadium Club and Ultra). All 550 cards are printed on full-color glossy cardstock with borderless fronts (with the exception of a marbleized corner) and foil stamping. The reverse side features a landmark of the player's home city, and an embossed holo foil stamped team logo.

The only notable rookie card in this set is J.T. Snow. White Sox slugger (and at that time, Leaf pitch-man) Frank Thomas signed 3500 cards, which were randomly seeded into Update packs. In addition, a special card commemorating Dave Winfield's 3000th base hit was also seeded into Update packs.

Distribution

Wax: 36 packs per box, 14 cards per pack. 6250, 12-box, cases of Update Series produced.

Jumbo: 24 packs per box, 20 cards per pack. Series One and Two only.

Magazine: Series One and Two only.

Exclusive to 14-card wax packs, the first ten cards were in Series One, the last ten in Series Two, and cards U1-U5 in the Update product.

Leaf produced jumbo (3 1/2 by 5 inch) versions for retail repacks.

A jumbo version of this set was produced for the Update Series. Each Update Series box had one 7.5" X 10.5" jumbo card packaged as a box topper. The jumbos are all serial-numbered to 7500 copies.

On the Fast Track

The first 10 cards were exclusive to Series One magazine jumbo packs; while cards 11-20 were in Series Two magazine packs. Due to the scarcity of magazine packs, this is one of the scarcer inserts of the era.

Gold All-Stars

The first 20 cards were inserted one per 1993 Leaf jumbo packs; the first ten were Series One inserts, the second ten were Series Two inserts. The final ten cards were randomly inserted in 1993 Leaf Update packs. The Update Gold All-Stars feature the starting line-ups from the 1993 All-Star Game.
