Description

2000 Pacific Invincible is a 150-card set released in October, 2000. All cards are written in both English and Spanish.

The product was intended for release in August, but was pushed back so that Pacific could include their first game-used inserts. Unfortunately for Pacific, among those game-used cards is the now infamous Manny Ramirez "corked bat" card.

Distribution

36 packs per box, three cards per pack (MSRP: $2.99)

Each pack contained either a Diamond Aces (pitchers) or Kings of the Diamond (position players) card. "Kings of the Diamond" are not to be confused with the Donruss "Diamond Kings." Both sets are designed like a playing card.

Each Wild Vinyl card is printed on vinyl and blank-backed. The backs of these are blank because the card stock used for these cards could not have anything printed on the reverse side (see the 36:50 mark of The Essential Credentials Podcast). With only ten serial-numbered copies of each card, Wild Vinyl is one of the scarcest non-parallel inserts ever produced.

Manny Ramirez "Corked" Bat Card Controversy

http://img.beckett.com/news/news-content/uploads/2012/09/Mannycork.jpg

At least two of the 200 serial-numbered copies of the Manny Ramirez's Game Gear bat card (card #16 in the set) have a piece of cork in them.

On a January 2012 edition of Cardboard Connection Radio, Jeff Morris, Pacific's former Vice President of Marketing, detailed the story behind the infamous Manny Ramirez "corked bat" Game Gear card.

Further, on a March 2021 edition of The Essential Credentials Podcast, the former CEO of Pacific, Mike Cramer, spoke about the infamous Manny Ramirez card (start at the 1:00:00 mark of the episode). He dispelled the myth that some believed for years that the card/controversy led to Pacific's exit from the baseball card business (it did not have any impact on Pacific's decision to stop producing baseball cards) and elaborated further on the Ramirez card. Specifically, Cramer stated that Pacific purchased a couple Ramirez game-used bats from a very reputable source, cut them up, produced the cards, then prepared the cards for distribution. After the cards were packed/distributed, he then found out that some of Ramirez's Game Gear cards featured a swatch of the bat along with some cork. Cramer estimated that six of these corked bat Ramirez cards exist and there was nothing Pacific could do to prevent the distribution of them. Cramer also stated that Ramirez years later admitted using corked bats.
