Description

1984 Topps is a 792-card, single-series, set. For the second consecutive year, the design featured two photos on the front. Rookie Cards in this set include Don Mattingly and Darryl Strawberry.

Topps tested a special send-in offer in Michigan and a few other states whereby collectors could obtain direct from Topps ten cards of their choice. Needless to say most people ordered the key (most valuable) players necessitating the printing of a special sheet to keep up with the demand. The special sheet had five cards of Darryl Strawberry, three cards of Don Mattingly, etc. The test was apparently a failure in Topps' eyes as they have never tried it again.

Distribution

Wax: 36 packs per box, 15 cards plus one stick of gum per pack (MSRP: $0.30).

Cello: 24 packs per box, 28 cards plus one stick of gum per pack (MSRP: $0.49).

Rack: 24 packs per box, 54 cards per pack (MSRP: $0.99).

Sugarless Rack: 36 cards plus three sticks of sugarless gum per pack.

Variations

According to hobby lore, several card test sheets made their way out of the factory and were cut up into single cards. These test cards have a slight variation when compared to a standard 1984 Topps cards. The player's head on the test cards, located in the lower left corner, is totally inside the box. It appears only 66 different head-in-box cards were produced in this fashion.

Topps produced a full 792-card parallel of their flagship Topps set, in uncut sheet form, as part of a promotion with Nestle. For $4.95 and five Nestle candy wrappers, collectors would receive their choice of one of six 132-card uncut sheets. All six sheets make up the full set. Only 5000 of each sheet was printed.

The cards are exactly the same as the regular Topps set, with the exception of the Nestle logo replacing the Topps logo on the front.

Because the Nestle set was distributed in uncut sheet format, singles that are (very, very, carefully) cut out, command a premium.

Tiffany

1984 marked the debut of the Topps Tiffany factory set. Sold exclusively to Hobby dealers, Tiffany was a full 792-card parallel of the 1984 Topps set, but printed on a higher-quality glossy cardstock. The sets were printed at Topps' plant in Ireland and use the same white cardstock as the Topps Traded sets of the era.

Only 10,000 Tiffany sets were produced.

One card from this 22-card set was inserted into each rack pack. The set features the manager and starting lineups of the previous year's All-Star Game and one "Honorary Team Member."

This would be the debut of the Glossy All-Stars which would be an annual staple until 1991.

Glossy Send-Ins

For the second consecutive year, Topps offered a 40-card bonus set. Inserted into each pack was an All-Star Baseball Game Bonus Card with anywhere from one to five "runs." Collectors who accumulate 25 Runs can redeem them (along with $0.50 for postage and handling) for a pack of five cards from this set and be entered in a contest for a trip to the 1985 World Series. (This promotion was void in Ohio)
