2013 Topps Heritage

Description

2013 Topps Heritage, a 600-card set, released in two series. The main Heritage product, consisting of the first 500 cards, was released to retail outlets on Wednesday, February 27th and to the hobby on Wednesday, March 6, 2013.

The final 100 cards (#H501-#H600) are part of the "Heritage High Number" set, which was released exclusively to Topps' e-commerce website on November 21. Each High-Number factory set contains 100 base cards and one autograph. Sets were sold exclusively by Topps via their web store shoptopps.com. It appears that the number of sets produced increased from 2012. Topps has not released production figures, however many are estimating the number to be between 2,000 to 5,000 sets.

Please note that, for the first time since 2001, Ichiro does not have a card in this set, as his contract with Topps had expired.

Errors, Variations, and Gimmicks

Action Image Gimmicks

Each Action Image Gimmick card features, as the name suggests, the player depicted in an "In-Action" pose, as opposed to the "head-and-shoulders" portraits found on the vast majority of base cards. These cards are exclusive to Hobby packs and have no provenance in the 1964 Topps set.

Color Gimmicks

Each Color Gimmick card has the team name in yellow letters and the name and position over a gray bar. These cards are exclusive to Hobby packs and have no provenance in the 1964 Topps set.

Washington Senators Gimmicks

Originally, 2013 Topps Heritage was to include a series of Houston "Colt .45s" variations. Due to reasons that have not been fully explained by either Topps, MLB, or the MLBPA, these have been changed to Washington "Senators" gimmicks. Each card depicts the player in a "throwback" Washington Senators uniform.

These cards have no provenance in the 1964 Topps set.

Errors

In the 1964 Topps set, there were two corrected and five uncorrected errors. For 2013 Heritage, these cards are the basis of six short-printed cards, which were revealed, but not fully identified, shortly after the product's release.

Since Topps has a history of basing Heritage short-prints on actual error cards we have listed the following checklist of 1964 Topps errors below.

In the original '64 Topps set ...

• Card #4, AL Pitching Leaders: Originally, on the back of the card there was an apostrophe after the word "PITCHING". This error card was corrected.
• Cards #125, #325, #335 and #355: Pete Rose, Hector Lopez, Don Mossi and Vic Power: The back of Rose, Lopez, Mossi and Power's cards all have incorrect birthdates. Neither error was never corrected.
• Card #440, Roberto Clemente: On the back of "Bob" Clemente's card, the word Pittsburgh on his 1960 stat line is misspelled "Pittsburfh". This error was never corrected.

Each Heritage Chrome card is serial-numbered to 999 copies and available in the following parallels.

Black-Bordered

Available only in specially-marked retail three-pack hanger packs, these cards are identical to the Chrome cards minus the chrome. The checklist is the same, but the numbering parallels the base set.

Venezuelan (Black Back)

The Venezuelan parallel is based on a set from 1964 released in Venezuela. Unlike other "international" sets of the era, the '64 Venezuelans were printed entirely in English as are the 2013 Heritage Venezuelans. The only distinguishing difference is that the Venezuelans have black backs.

A checklist was not released by Topps, however it appears that Venezuelans exist for all 500 of the base cards and all of the Gimmick cards for the short-printed series (cards #426-500) for a total of 537.
