1977 O-Pee-Chee

From BaseballCardPedia.com

Description

1977 O-Pee-Chee is a 264-card abridgement of the annual Topps Baseball set, produced under license for the Canadian market. Despite the addition of a second Canadian MLB Team (Toronto Blue Jays), OPC decided to cut the size of their annual set by 60%. Despite this, the Blue Jays and Expos are overrepresented in the set.

There are no Team Checklists in the set. Instead, both the Jays and Expos' managers and coaching staffs have their own cards.

Card #175 depicts John Lowenstein as a Toronto Blue Jay, a team he would never play for. On December 6th, 1976, the Indians traded Lowenstein (along with Rick Cerrone) to Toronto for Rico Carty -- whom the Jays selected from Cleveland in the 1976 Expansion Draft. Lowenstein went to Spring Training with his new team; however, on March 29th, 1977 -- about a week before opening day -- The Jays traded Lowenstein back to Cleveland for pitcher Hector Torres.

(Lowenstein is still depicted with Cleveland on card #393 in the 1977 Topps set.)

Since this was the Blue Jays' first season, OPC made sure to include as many Jays (in uniform) as possible. And since O-Pee-Chee went to press months after Topps, it was common for OPC to notate late trades. Hence John Lowenstein's 1977 O-Pee-Chee card: A card for a team he never played for, with a notation for a team he never really left.
