This 12-card set recognized the players who connected for a grand slam home run during the 1989 season. Cards featured the same design as the base card, but with a powder-blue triangle in the bottom-left of the card front that featured the insert name. The back of the card described the grand slam hit by each player. One Grand Slammer card was inserted into each 37-card cello pack and an entire set was included into each factory set.

Due to licensing issues, each pack of 1990 Donruss Baseball was required to contain a three-piece panel of a 63-piece jigsaw puzzle. When assembled, the puzzle featured an original Dick Perez painting of Yastrzemski. The assembled puzzle appears on card #588 in the base set.

Description
At 716 cards, the 1990 Donruss release was the largest set ever produced by the company up to that point. The card fronts featured either a portrait or action shot of the player, surrounded by an unmistakable bright red border that were accented by black/grey/white dots and featured a cursive white-text nameplate. The card reverse was horizontal and similar to previous Donruss sets, featuring up to 5 years of career stats, personal information, and career highlights.
There were two subsets, Diamond Kings (cards 1-27) and Rated Rookies (28-47). 1990 marked the 9th straight year the staple Diamond Kings art cards from the Perez-Steele Galleries were featured as subsets within the base set. The Rated Rookies subset returned for the 7th consecutive year. Additionally, cards of players who were All-Stars in 1989 displayed an All-Star logo on the front on their card. The base set also featured several commemorative cards: #643 Mike Schmidt "All Time Greats"; #659 Nolan Ryan "5,000 K'S"; and former Baseball Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti, who had passed away in 1989.
Given the large number of cards in the set and the lower quality control standards from the time, 1990 Donruss unfortunately suffered from a large number of printing/text errors that were corrected after the cards were released. Most of these were minor printing flaws and insignificant variations that most collectors have deemed unworthy of price differentials. There were also several double-printed cards, indicated in the checklist below with a "DP" coding.
Notable Rookie Cards of Juan Gonzalez, David Justice, Sammy Sosa, Larry Walker, and Bernie Williams were in this set.
This set is most notable for the the Aqueous Test cards and the Juan Gonzalez Reverse Negative RC. The Gonzalez Reverse Negative card was an accidental printing error that resulted in a player photo of Juan Gonzalez that made him look like a left-handed batter - this error stemmed from the improper use of the photographic negative when printing on the card. This error was quickly identified by Donruss as they re-issued a correction featuring Gonzalez in the correct orientation. Even though the error was corrected quickly, the Reverse Negative Gonzalez is not considered to be rare or even hard to find as Donruss printed hundreds of thousands of each base card overall.

Promos
A pack of two cards from a 12-card promotional set were sent to Hobby dealers to preview the set. The front of each card had the same design as the pack-issued versions but the backs were white and featured the words "1990 PREVIEW CARDS/No. XX of 12". These promo packs were only sent to master distributors and dealers that purchased directly from Donruss - thus, cards from this promotional set are some of the tougher ones to find the Junk Wax era.

NOTES:
- There are different versions of the checklist cards. The checklists inserted into packs account for the 26 pack-exclusive MVP inserts ("a" in this checklist below); while the factory set checklists ("b") do not.
- Most of the All-Star cards have one of two errors (or in the case of Harold Baines's AS, combinations of both). Some AS's have the words "RECENT MAJOR LEAGUE PERFORMANCE" on the back, instead of the proper "ALL-STAR GAME PERFORMANCE." The other error involves the yellow star on the front the card with a black line running through it instead of the star in front of the line behind it.
- There is a variation where the period behind the Inc. in the copyright statement is missing.
- The black/grey/white accent dots on the card front that created a paint-splatter" effect differed, depending on how they were distributed - specifically, cards that came from factory sets featured a different pattern from the cards that were pulled from packs.
- Some player's birth dates were not corrected until the factory set release.
- On the copyright some cards have a period after " © 1989 LEAF, INC.", while some do not.
Many of these errors were due to the fact that Donruss outsourced production to multiple printing facilities, some of which had never produced baseball cards before. Identified errors are listed in the checklist below.

Parallels
Aqueous Test
Donruss produced a high-gloss, or "Aqueous" test issue prior to the official printing of the base set that were not intended to be released to the public. These Aqueous Test cards were identical to the 1990 Donruss base set except for three features:
- A glossy coating on the front
- The words "AQUEOUS TEST" printed (not stamped) on the back
- The "." in "INC" in the copyright line in the upper-right of the card back is missing
Identifying Fakes/Counterfeits:
- There are strictly 264 cards from the base set that have an Aqueous Test "parallel" and can be seen in the checklist below. No new Aqueous Test cards have surfaced in the years since these first started appearing on the secondary market in the mid-to-late 1990s. Thus, any player not on the checklist below should be approached with extreme caution.
- The words "AQUEOUS TEST" are 'printed' diagonally across the back, not stamped. Thus, the ink from each letter should seem flush with other text on the back, rather than an overlay on top of the existing text. Additionally, these words should not be faded.
- All Aqueous Test cards feature a missing "." in "INC" in the copyright line on the card back.
Only 264 of the 716 base cards officially have an Aqueous Test "parallel" as only two specific 132-card sheets were printed for this test run:
- 236 base cards
- 9 Diamond King subset cards
- 9 Rated Rookie subset cards
- 10 MVP subset cards (only available in factory sets)
These cards came about because Donruss was testing out new card coatings/finishes that were less harmful to the environment than ultra-violet (UV) coatings, which used toxic chemicals to create the glossy finish to cards. The testing of this new coating - identified as "aqueous" in the printing industry - was used by Donruss to examine the viability of this finish on cards. Aqueous coatings are water-based (hence the name), less harmful to the environment, and produced a semi-glossy finish to a card (though not as glossy a finish as a UV finish). Today, aqueous coatings are the preferred method of applying gloss to ink on sheets of cards.
According to Hobby legend, these cards were issued in packs, however they weren't released to the public in general distribution. Several boxes were purchased by a card shop when a former Donruss employee - a packaging director - sold them off along with some other Donruss unopened wax boxes. Among some of the late-'80s and early '90s Donruss wax boxes were a few plain white cardboard boxes with a memo, something to the effect of "Donruss Canada" written on the side. These boxes contained 1990 Donruss cello packs which were loaded with the Aqueous cards. Other unopened Aqueous boxes claimed to have turned up at a card shop in the Midwest.
In late August of 2012, an eBay seller sold eight unopened Aqueous packs for $200-$250 each. According to a few of the buyers, these packs contained 15 cards and one puzzle piece even though the wrapper stated only ten cards in each pack.
The PSA set registry officially acknowledges that slightly over 5000 total Aqueous Test copies exist (i.e., approximately 20 copies of each player). This follows a natural progression of the Standard Catalog, which officially stated approximately 2000 - 2500 back in 2005.

Blue & White Test
Not much is known about the 1990 Donruss Blue & White Test cards. It is believed that these cards - which have the look of a 1990 Donruss base card, but with blue borders (instead of red) on the front and an all-white bordered card on the back - were never intended to be released.
228 unique cards have emerged, with some being double-printed (DP). It is believed that the fewer than five or six copies of each card exist.

Super Diamond Kings
This 27-card, oversize parallel set of the Diamond Kings subset was available through a mail-in offer directly from Donruss for $12 and three 1990 Donruss wrappers. Each card measures 4 7/8" by 6 13/16".
In addition to the 26 Diamond Kings, a jumbo sized Nolan Ryan "King of Kings" card was also included in the set. Like all Super DK sets, singles remain sought-after by through-the-mail (TTM) autograph collectors.

Inserts
Bonus MVPs
This 26-card set featured the most valuable player from each team and featured the same red borders and white nameplate, but with the acronym "MVP" printed consecutively in orange against a brown backdrop behind the player photo. These were randomly inserted in all 1990 Donruss packs and were printed at the same rate as any of the other base cards. The factory sets were distributed without the Bonus MVPs. Early printings depicted Tom Glavine on John Smoltz's card. This was corrected very early in the production run.

Grand Slammers
This 12-card set recognized the players who connected for a grand slam home run during the 1989 season. Cards featured the same design as the base card, but with a powder-blue triangle in the bottom-left of the card front that featured the insert name. The back of the card described the grand slam hit by each player. One Grand Slammer card was inserted into each 37-card cello pack and an entire set was included into each factory set.

Carl Yastrzemski Puzzle
This year's subject for the Donruss Puzzle was Carl Yastrzemski.
Additionally, there is a variation puzzle that has all puzzle pieces with a dot in front of the number. However, this variation is not considered to be rare.
