2002 Studio

Description

2002 Studio is a 275-card set issued in two separate series. In response to the disappointing sales of the previous year's Studio, the 2002 version was reconfigured and sold at a price point more in-line with the brand's 1990s hey day.

The first 250 cards were released in July as part of the Studio product. Cards 1-200 feature veterans while cards 201-250 feature rookies and prospects and were all serial-numbered to 1500 copies. The base set's American Flag themed design (which, curiously, also applied to cards from the two Canadian teams) can be seen in retrospect as part of the post-9/11 patriotic symbolism of the era.

Cards 251-275 were distributed in packs of 2002 Donruss The Rookies December, 2002. These cards featured a selection of rookies and prospects and were also serial-numbered to 1500.

Distribution

Retail: 24 packs per box, five cards per pack (MSRP: $2.99). 16 boxes per case. 1430 cases produced.

Hobby: 18 packs per box, six cards per pack (MSRP: $4). 16 boxes per case. 1200 cases produced.

Beckett Samples

Inside each copy of the September, 2002 issue of Beckett Baseball Card Monthly was either a 2002 Absolute Memorabilia or 2002 Studio Sample card. The Studio Sample set parallels the first 200 cards in the base set. As with other similar Beckett Sample promo sets of the era, each card has "SAMPLE" stamped in silver foil on the reverse, with ten percent of the production run stamped in gold.

Toys R Us

This 24-card set was given away at the Toys R Us store in Times Square, New York. Each card is embossed with a special commemorative logo.

These cards were randomly inserted into packs of 2002 Donruss The Rookies. Each card is serial-numbered to 1500 copies.

Parallels

Proof

All 275 base cards are available in a Proof parallel, which is serial-numbered to 100 copies. The last 25 cards in the set were randomly inserted into packs of 2002 Donruss The Rookies.

Silver Flag

These unannounced parallels all have a silver-foil stamped American Flag on the front. Donruss-Playoff later said that the cards were intended for a contest, but the contest was abandoned before the release of the product. The announced production figures for each card are listed below; however, not all cards are serial-numbered.

All-Star Game

Collectors who attended the 2002 All-Star Game FanFest Milwaukee, WI and opened a box of Studio at the Donruss-Playoff corporate booth would receive a special "All-Star Game" parallel. Each card is stamped with the All-Star Game's logo. All-Star Game editions of all 250 base cards were made for this promotion.

Chicago National

Collectors who attended the 2002 National Sports Collectors Convention in Rosemont, IL, and opened a box of Studio at the Donruss-Playoff corporate booth would receive a special "Chicago National" parallel. Each card is embossed with a "2002 Chicago" logo, and each card is serial-numbered to five copies. Chicago National editions of all 250 base cards were made for this promotion.

Each Classic card is done in the style of the 1991 Studio set and is serial-numbered to 1000. Each card is also available in a "First Ballot" parallel, which is serial-numbered to the year in which they were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame minus 1900.
