2002 Donruss

Description

The 2002 Donruss Baseball set consists of 220 cards. Cards 151-200 make up the "Rated Rookies" subset and are seeded into packs at the rate of 1:4. Unlike the previous year's set, these cards are NOT serial-numbered. Cards 201-220 were Fan Club subset cards are were inserted at 1:8 packs.

Distribution

Four-card packs were distributed to The Hobby and retail. The MSRP was $1.99/pack.

Hobby and retail boxes contained 24 packs; eight and 17-pack Blasters were also issued.

Inside the March 2002 issue of Beckett Baseball Card Monthly, is a 2002 Donruss promo card. Only the first 150 cards of this set were issued and each has "SAMPLE" foil-stamped on the reverse side. 10% of cards are stamped in gold foil.

Chicago Collection

Collectors who attended the March, 2002 Chicago Sun-Times cardshow and opened a sealed Hobby box of 2002 Donruss Baseball at Donruss-Playoff's corporate booth would receive a "Chicago Collection" card. Each Chicago Collection has a special foil-stamp and card is serial-numbered to five. The set parallels the full 220-card base set.

National Convention

Similar to the Chicago Collection, collectors who attended the 2002 National Sports Collectors Convention in Rosemont, IL (the same venue as the Sun-Times show), and opened a sealed Hobby box of 2002 Donruss Baseball would receive a special "National Convention" card. Unlike the Chicago Collection set, each card is embossed (and not foil-stamped) with the 2002 NSCC logo and are serial-numbered /5 on the back.

Longball Leaders

Each Longball Leaders is serial-numbered to 1000 copies. A Seasonal Sum parallel, serial-numbered to the player's 2001 home run total, is also available, the production of which is listed below.

Production Line

This massive sixty-card set features 2001's league leaders in three offensive statistics. Cards 1-20 are the leaders in on-base percentage, 21-40 in slugging percentage, and 41-60 in OPS. Each card is serial numbered to the player's respective 2000 stat in that category multiplied by 1000.

For example, Todd Helton's on-base percentage in 2000 was .432; therefore, his Production Line insert (card #PL-5) is numbered to 432 copies.

In addition, the first 100 copies of each card are die-cut. So, using the Helton example, there are 100 die-cuts and the remaining 332 are not. The production figures listed below are the aggregate production of die-cut and non-die-cut cards, and what each card is serial-numbered to.
