1988 O-Pee-Chee

Description

1988 O-Pee-Chee is a 396-card abridgement of the 1988 Topps set, produced and distributed exclusively for the Canadian market. As usual, it has a higher ratio of cards of players from the two Canadian teams, and the text is in both English and French. The set has the same design as that of the Topps set, but with the O-Pee-Chee logo on the front of every card.

Due to the fact that the OPC set was released months after Topps, selected players who changed teams are noted.

New for '88, are cards of players selected by the Montreal Expos and Toronto Blue Jays in the 1987 MLB Draft. Also, for the first time factory sets were distributed.

Distribution

48 packs per box, ten cards plus one stick of gum per pack (MSRP: C$0.35).

Blank Backs

1988 OPC "Blank Backs" are extremely common. It's believed that these cards were hand cut directly from an uncut sheet which was backdoored from the factory. (It was common practice for OPC to give each employee an uncut sheet for their birthday and as a Christmas bonus.)

Box Bottoms

These "cards" were featured four to a box on the bottom of each waxbox. There were four different panels for a total of 16 cards. The set is lettered A-P rather than sequentially-numbered. When individually cut out, each card measures 2.5" X 3.5". The design is identical to that of the base set, only with light blue borders.

NOTE: The same sixteen cards were also printed on the bottom of 1988 Topps waxboxes -- the only difference being the lack of French text on the back.
