1991 Donruss
Description
1991 Donruss is a 770-card set, issued in two series of 386 and 384 cards, respectively. This set marked the first time Donruss issued cards in multiple series.
First series cards feature blue borders and second series green borders with some stripes and the players name in white against a red background. Subsets include Diamond Kings (1-27), Rated Rookies (28-47/413-432), AL All-Stars (48-56), MVP's (387-412) and NL All-Stars (433-441). There were also special cards to honor the award winners and the heroes of the World Series. On cards 60, 70, 127, 182, 239, 294, 355, 368, and 377, the border stripes are red and yellow. There are no notable Rookie Cards in this set.
Distribution
Cards were also distributed in Holiday (Halloween) teat bags. Each bag contained 22 3-card sealed packs.
Reviews
1991 Donruss was panned as “complacent” in the March 1991 issue of Beckett Baseball Card Monthly. The set was featured in the “Card Critic” column titled “Opposites Don’t Always Attract”. Chuck Roethel did a comparison review of the 1991 regular issue sets of Donruss and Fleer. Mr. Roethel had completely unfavorable remarks. He lamented, “In desperation, I sought something positive to say” and ultimately he couldn’t. Comments such as “dampens my enthusiasm”, “predictable style”, “lackluster” ‘”(No) stroke of genius” are littered throughout his review. Mr. Roethel was also frustrated by the idea that the inserts were “becoming more significant” than the set itself. A prophetic statement as 1991 was just the start of the insert card craze that has now long become standard.

Promos
This 12-card standard-size set was issued by Donruss for hobby dealers as examples of what the 1991 Donruss cards would look like. These cards have the 1991 Donruss design on the front; the back merely says 1991 Preview card and identifies the player and the team.

Parallels
Super DKs
For the seventh consecutive year Donruss issued a card set featuring the players used in the current year's Diamond King subset in a larger size, approximately 5" X 7". The set again featured the art work of famed sports artist Dick Perez and was available through a postpaid mail-in offer detailed on the 1991 Donruss wax packs involving $14.00 and three wax wrappers.
Inserts
Bonus Cards
These 22 cards were randomly inserted in Donruss packs and highlight outstanding player achievements. The first ten cards were in the first series and the remaining 12 in the second. The cards were produced in roughly the same quantity as any other base card, but not included in factory sets.

Elite
One of the truly landmark sets, these special cards were randomly inserted in the 1991 Donruss first and second series wax packs. These cards marked the beginning of an eight-year run of Elite inserts. Production was limited to a maximum of 10,000 serial-numbered cards for each card in the Elite series, and lesser production for the Ryne Sandberg Signature (5000) and Nolan Ryan Legend (7500) cards. This was the first time that mainstream insert cards were ever serial-numbered allowing for verifiable proof of print runs. The regular Elite cards are photos enclosed in a bronze marble borders which surround an evenly squared photo of the players. The Sandberg Signature card has a green marble border and is signed in a blue sharpie. The Nolan Ryan Legend card is a Dick Perez drawing with silver borders. The cards are all serial-numbered on the back.
Although the exact pack insertion odds were never publicly revealed, it has been estimated that the odds of finding an Elite card were about 1:75/boxes. Because 1991 Donruss was grossly over-produced, a large portion of the production run (anywhere from 30% to 50%) remains hidden away in unopened packs. Compared to other serial-numbered inserts that would come in later years, the '91 Elites have maintained their value over the years because of their genuine scarcity.

Ryne Sandberg Elite Signature Series
As part of the Elite insert series, Donruss had Ryne Sandberg autograph 5000 cards for random insertion in all 1991 Donruss packs. Like with the un-signed Elite cards, many of the cards remain hidden in opened packs. Despite the announced print run of 5000 cards, this card remains relatively scarce.
